Sightseeing for Land Lovers

What draws most people to Sooke is the breathtaking oceanic experiences available in the area – whale watching, kayaking, and fishing – to name a few. Head inland from the shoreline and Sooke opens up an entire other world of options – from shopping to golfing and more. Dry off and take a break from the open ocean to explore everything else Sooke has to offer.

Wineries can be found scattered across the province. Our favourite winery, Blue Grouse Estate Winery, is located just over an hour away from Sooke in Duncan BC. This winery offers visitors and locals alike a unique and delicious venue from which to get their libations. With a sprawling Vineyard and a delightful selection of mouthwatering wines, visitors can spend the day meandering the grounds, tasting wines in the elegant west coast-style tasting room, and stock up before heading home. It’s the perfect way to spend a day without getting your hair wet.

Traditional wine isn’t the only spirit that the Island excels in. Take a trip to Tugwell Creek Honey Farm and Meadery to enjoy a wide range of unique, delectable honey meads. Their motto is from bee to bottle and they really mean it. Tugwell takes a step back in time through their operations, creating honey wines that call back to the time of our European ancestors – times where royals and commoners alike brewed and imbibed homemade meads created with ingredients available to them. Tugwell’s range of options strives to create products in a similar manner, utilizing their in-house bee colony for honey and locally grown ingredients. Visitors can enjoy self-guided or guided tours of the facility, product tastings, and more at this authentic hidden gem.

After stocking up your wine rack, head to Sooke Country Market to stock your fridge and cupboards. The market runs from 10am to 2pm every Saturday from May to October, and one visit is just never enough. Patrons can stock up on groceries like locally grown fruits and vegetables and locally farmed eggs, baked goods, jams and jellies and more. Groceries aren’t the only thing the market offers. A range of other goods are available for purchase, such as plants and flowers, artwork, jewelry, and more. All goods are grown, cultivated, or created by local artisans, so at Sooke Country Market, you know you’re in good hands.

All shopped out? Head out to DeMamiel Creek Golf Course for a round of golf. With nine holes nestled in a forested, tree-lined setting, DeMamiel is the perfect course for both beginners and more experienced golfers, and it’s a fantastic way to spend an afternoon. This par three course is perfect for the entire family. Just remember, Demamiel does not allow guests to book tee times in advance. The course is first come, first serve, so make sure to head to the course early.

With so much to do and so many delicious items to purchase, it’s a good thing that Sooke Harbour Resort and Marina offers suites with fully equipped gourmet kitchens. Whip up healthy dinners with locally grown ingredients even while on vacation, and then settle in front of your private fireplace with a glass of wine or honey mead, made with love.
